My heart POPS for you!

Valentine's Day in fourth grade has been the most entertaining day in my teaching career thus far. I began the morning by distributing small pieces of pink and red construction paper to each student. I instructed them to make a valentine for each person in the room before seventh period. During seventh period we would trade. I gave them each a class roster and told them to cross off each person's name to make sure they didn't skip anyone. I also made it a point to say their message needed to be specific, not just "Happy V-Day!" Each Valentine needed to have an encouraging or nice note on it. The following are just a few of the "nice" and "encourgaing" things my students had to say to one another.

"You are a really good drawer."

"I think you are really funny. I like it when you pick Miss Nall up."

"Happy Valentine's Day! Next time you will lose, and I will win, and you will be in the hospital. Your friend, (Insert kid's name here)"

"Love is kind like you!"

"I've had a lot of secret admirers in my life." - Fourth Grader regarding the candy gram he sent to himself "from his secret admirer".

"You are pretty like the nature!"

"I'm sorry that I did not do my homework last night, Miss Nall. You are the best teacher in the world."

I gave all of my kiddos a little decorated bag of popcorn and chocolate that said "My heart POPS for you! Love, Miss Nall." When I gave it to my boys they immidiately laughed, and then one genius (my favortie, if I was allowed to have one) said, "So you died nineteen times!?! You said we made your heart pop. If your heart pops you will die. That's sad Miss Nall."

This is where I got the idea. Well... where my roommate got the idea for me :)
